Kalevala CAL - Part 6 - Hostess of Pohja

It is time for our sixth square, that is to say we have already one fourth of our blocks together! Today there is little to celebrate for women in Finnish name calendar, only "Sandra" gets to represent the fair sex, in other words all the beautiful women: girls, wives, bitches, hags, birds, dolls, chicks and queens.

"Know I other mighty measures, Know I means that are efficient, And against thy golden moonlight, And the splendor of thy sunshine, And thy plowing, and thy reaping;

(Kalevala poem 43, 307-312)

DESIGNER PORTRAIT: Maarit Leinonen

My name is Maarit Leinonen and I'm a mother, a doctor and a crochet enthusiast. My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was about six years old. For me crochet is therapy and a natural way to express my creativity. Nowadays I usually modify or combine different crochet patterns and rarely use ready-made ones. This is the first time I designed and wrote down a pattern for a specific purpose. I perceive and think about crochet patterns as forms and dimensions rather than in single stitches, which might show in my pattern and make it little more difficult. Hints for making my square: If you find some parts tricky or difficult, stop for a while, look at the pictures and then continue which ever way you see best. There is no right or wrong in crochet Feel free to alter the pattern to fit your own taste and gauge.
